Recent findings



Maybe you're amazing into music and you know all these people already. I still enjoy finding amazing albums and artists that aren't current. Kids listen to the whole history of music on the internet now, they don't just listen to the hot new thing.


Someone posted this album on r/jazz asking if it was jazz, so I had to listen to it. I think it's experimental music, but it's a close cousin to free jazz. Neptunian Maximalism put out an album called Eons (2020). Bandcamp


Karen O. Never heard of her, but I guess I know that song from Her (2013). She has solo stuff and is in Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I saw her in the Criterion Closet, and I like their video on YouTube. She picks Elevators To The Gallows which is on regular play in my house too.


Kofi Stone has a song on the new episode of Slow Horses. Been listening to him.


There was an article of 100 obscure songs from the 70's that was problematic, but I hardly knew most of the artists. Someone created a playlist on Spotify, which I'm de-emphasizing and haven't switched to Tidal yet.

Shaggs

Just read about the Shaggs in This Is What It Sounds Like.  I'm listening to them. I'm reading the New Yorker about their 2017 concert ( Archive ). Wikipedia: The Shaggs composed seemingly simple and bizarre songs using untuned guitars, erratic time signatures, disconnected rhythms, wandering melodies and rudimentary lyrics. According to Rolling Stone, the sisters sang like "lobotomized Trapp Family Singers", while the musician Terry Adams compared their music to the free jazz compositions of Ornette Coleman.  The Shaggs formed at the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin, who believed that his mother had predicted their rise to fame. For several years, he made them practice every day and perform weekly at the Fremont town hall. The girls had no interest in becoming musicians and never became proficient in songwriting or performing. Female vocalist I like

My friend asked for more women vocalists. I sent him Right Back To It by Waxahatchee, which is my current favorite. Kathryn Crutchfield is the singer. Unfortunately when I’m meditating, these kinds of questions obsess me as a kind of distraction.  My first thought was Joni Mitchell , and Brandi Carlile . Those two are giants. There’s nobody like Ella Fitzgerald , I think she’s the top. I like her work with Duke Ellington best. Billie Holiday is a favorite. I love it that J. Edgar Hoover sent an agent to get the dirt on her, and he fell in love with her. I love her albums with Lester Young .  Alison Krauss has such a sweet voice, from bluegrass to pop. Her latest albums have been with the guy who sang for Led Zeppelin.  Linda Ronstadt constantly amazed me. Blue Bayou is amazing. Lately I've been listening to Sophie Milman .
