Nala Sinephro (born 1996) is a Belgian experimental jazz musician based in London. She is best known for her ambient jazz compositions, where she predominantly plays the pedal harp, modular synthesiser, keyboards and piano.

Singers who lost their voices:

Julie Andrews: The legendary soprano lost her pure, four-octave singing range after a botched 1997 surgery to remove benign vocal nodules resulted in irreversible scarring on her vocal cords.

Steven Tyler: The Aerosmith frontman was forced to retire from touring in 2024 after fracturing his larynx during a 2023 performance, an unprecedented injury from which his vocal cords could not recover.

Branco Mello: The singer from the Brazilian band Titãs lost his ability to sing and speak entirely after undergoing medical procedures for a tumor in his larynx.

Elton John: While not completely silent, a 1987 throat surgery to remove nodules permanently altered his range and took away his signature falsetto.

Linda Ronstadt: She lost her ability to sing entirely due to the degenerative effects of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (a condition initially thought to be Parkinson's disease), which affects the muscles controlling the voice.

There was a moment when I was reading a lot about Alice Coltrane and I was surprised to look back and not see I'd written about her on my music blog. Missy Mazzoli

Reading about  Missy Mazzoli today. Born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA in 1980.  She won the best new opera Grammy in 2017 for Breaking The Waves. She won the Kraviz prize ( Symphony.org ). Shaggs

Just read about the Shaggs in This Is What It Sounds Like.  I'm listening to them. I'm reading the New Yorker about their 2017 concert ( Archive ). Wikipedia: The Shaggs composed seemingly simple and bizarre songs using untuned guitars, erratic time signatures, disconnected rhythms, wandering melodies and rudimentary lyrics. According to Rolling Stone, the sisters sang like "lobotomized Trapp Family Singers", while the musician Terry Adams compared their music to the free jazz compositions of Ornette Coleman.  The Shaggs formed at the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin, who believed that his mother had predicted their rise to fame. For several years, he made them practice every day and perform weekly at the Fremont town hall. The girls had no interest in becoming musicians and never became proficient in songwriting or performing.
