This is What It Sounds Like by Susan Rogers and Ogi Ogas suggested the idea of "Pulling Records" where you play records for people to they know what you like.
Cyrus Chestnut Baroque Impressions (spotify). I love how he goes from classical to jazz and back again.
Katherine Kim "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" from Les Contes d'Hoffmann YouTube:
I just find this singing sublime Katherine Kim. She's so good. I've watched a lot of different versions, they're not as good as this. I thought it was the music I really liked, but her actual performance is so amazing. I don't think anyone gets close to it compared to her.
I'd say my roots are my stepfather's record collection, in which I listened to the Beatles and The Who and Bob Dylan. I'd say Sergeant Pepper is the height of that (spotify). Who's Next (1971) (Spotify). Here's my Bob Dylan post.
In 4th grade someone had a Barracuda single by Heart (spotify).
My neighbors had the first Van Halen album (1978), and I listened to that a million times. (spotify).
I listened to Back In Black 1980 by ACDC (spotify).
Then it's classic rock radio, which if you travel across America, is like the stupid overplayed soundtrack of America. One album was played at every party I went to my senior year, and I went to a lot of parties: Violent Femmes first album 1983 (spotify). I've read it's folk punk.
You can't get away from the 80's high school experience without Purple Rain by Prince (spotify). Susan Rogers was an engineer for Prince. My favorite song of prince is Kiss (spotify).
I got into jazz at some point. Course you go to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker. I listened to Phil Schaap every morning for bird flight.
I'd say Pres and Sweets is a favorite album (spotify)
You can see my latests favorite on this post.
I'd say my favorite opera is La Traviata. You can find a recording of that.
For many years, I'd start out doing dishes listening to Limelight YouTube. I love that song. Elizabeth Zharoff breaks down the song on YouTube. She suggests the disorientation of touring as a rock star is represented in the changing time signatures. She connects it to modern day social media, connected and yet isolated. She thinks the lyrics as gaining meaning. Often songs are dated in the moment, and the world has moved on.
