I'd say I'd rather just listen to jazz than people talking about it, but jazz is so vast, and the world is really opening up, and I'm always wanting to learn.
r/jazz asks about podcasts, and I find You'll Hear It on YouTube.
1. They start out the podcast riffing while playing piano. So they're a couple of pianists: Peter Martin,Adam Maness. They play some music. They talk over it some, which is good because they're all about describing what is going on. They seem to be in arrangements.
I listen to the latest episode about Shirley Horn’s “Here’s to Life” (spotify). "It’s an album only an artist with decades of love, loss, and resilience could create. In this episode, we break down Horn’s unmatched ability to accompany herself, the elegance of Johnny Mandel’s string arrangements, and the quiet confidence that defines every track. Whether you’re discovering Shirley Horn for the first time or revisiting a favorite, this episode will leave you hearing her – and your own life – a little differently."
Personnel:
Shirley Horn – vocals, piano
Charles Ables – bass
Steve Williams - drums
Johnny Mandel - arranger, conductor
Wynton Marsalis - trumpet (tracks 4 & 9)
Richard Todd, French horn, (track 1)
What I learned. Miles is on it, Wynton too. They give background on her, and how she really played the piano quite well, the way she sings and plays piano is unique. She took some time off in the 70's and it's recorded 1992. Her first album as a leader is recorded in 1960.
I found Live At The Village Vanguard on YouTube.
Looking over their previous 73 videos on YouTube, looks like a lot of albums to discover, and favorite ones I'd like to learn more about.
