April 2025

I know Spotify is corrupt, doesn't pay artists enough, and has an AI music problem (onetwo). I don't pay for it, and listen to commercials even though the heroine of Laid suggests that's not to be done. You don't like the links, don't click them. Pay for a service for me, and I'll link that up. I've added in YouTube sometimes.

YouTube: Cat was recorded in October 1975 at at Nippon Columbia Studio, while Hiroshi Suzuki was visiting his home country of Japan after moving to Las Vegas in 1971 to play with Buddy Rich and perfect his craft. Back on his old stomping grounds, the man known as Neko (Cat) immediately reunited with his dear friends for an epic two day session of groove magic. The chemistry was still intact. The skills and style had grown. The result, Cat, is a smooth masterpiece, a deep and soulful affair where stunning trombone solos by Hiroshi Suzuki flirt with Takeru Muraoka’s heavenly saxophone and the sensual rhythm section of Hiromasa Suzuki (keyboards), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), and Akira Ishikawa (drums).

Wikipedia: After release, the album didn't receive any notable acclaim, flopping in sales in Japan, and Suzuki experienced little to no recognition throughout his career. However, 39 years later in 2015, Columbia Records re-released the album in Japan to bring it to a wider audience. In the 21st century, the album has received light critical acclaim, and has found somewhat of a cult following amongst listeners of Japanese jazz, receiving recognition for its laid-back production and catchy rhythm. Cat was praised by The Vinyl Factory in 2021. "Romance" was included on the WaJazz album series, becoming his most well-known track across multiple music platforms and receiving over 11 million views on YouTube. A posthumous music video for "Romance" was released in 2023.

Alice Coltrane

There was a moment when I was reading a lot about Alice Coltrane and I was surprised to look back and not see I'd written about her on my music blog. I did quote the beginning of a book on her on another blog : Portrait of Devotion: The spiritual life of Alice Coltrane by Shankari C. Adams The introduction starts: “It was August 1975; a group of us had gone to a music hall in Northern California to hear Alice Coltrane perform in concert. Certain recreational activities, such as drinking and smoking, had been banned from the evening venue. This allowed for a higher vibrational energy to fill the room’s atmosphere. It felt clean and clear. Subsequently, the consciousness of those present felt elevated. The audience was seated and filled with joyful expectation.” I have two friends who are really into hallucinogens and I feel I get high enough meditating a lot.  I read about this album where she's just singing devotionally: Kirtan: Turiya Sings ( spotify ). Today I'm listenin...
