Listen to an album a day in 2025: January

I want to force myself to read more, and putting on an album isn't the best way, would be better to just read with a timer to commit, but there's noise outside my window, so I like to put on pleasant things, and it's cool to hear music. So I'm going to list albums I'm listening to. I'm going to favor instrumental albums and update, and change if I don't actually listen to albums I'm projecting into the future. Will link to wikipedia page of famous albums. And artist.

I know Spotify is corrupt, doesn't pay artists enough, and has an AI music problem (one, two). But I don't pay for it, and listen to commercials even though the heroine of Laid suggests that's not to be done. You don't like the links, don't click them. Pay for another service for me, and I'll link that up.

SF Jazz: Born in Tel Aviv in 1996, Lehavi was first attracted to the piano at six months of age and began playing as soon as he could reach the keys, picking out familiar tunes by ear and gravitating to classical and jazz as his tastes developed. He began formal classical piano lessons at the age of nine with Israeli classical virtuoso Michal Tal and began jazz studies at the Rimon School of Music in Ramat HaSharon at age 10 under pianists Rami Levin and Avi Adrian. A performance at the Red Sea Jazz Festival at 12 led to a trip to the U.S. the following year for an intensive five-week program at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he came to the attention of saxophone luminaries Dave Liebman and Ravi Coltrane, the latter of whom became a long-term collaborator whose creative partnership with Lehavi continues to the present day.

1/17/25. La Traviata by Verdi. I can't say I know which is the best version, I use spotify. On Reddit they like the Beverly Sills version. Maria Callas gets a nod or two. Traviata from La Scala in 1955 with Callas, Di Stefano, and Bastianini under Giulini is mentioned.

Listening is valuable, but seeing opera is pretty cool. This version of La Traviata is on Opera Vision until 9 May 2025. It's got 2 South Koreans singing, they do a brilliant job.

1/18/25. Breaking album format, because I just have a playlist of Pahua. Here is what NY Times writes 1/9/25:

"Across her career, the singer and producer Paulina Sotomayor has fed an omnivorous, culture-spanning musical appetite. The Mexico City native learned to sing in the regional Mexican tradition of mariachi and performed with the folk-rock band Jefes del Desierto. She later teamed up with her brother Raul, a producer and percussionist, to create electronic dance music inflected with the syncopated rhythms of Colombian cumbia and Peruvian chicha. Now performing solo under the name Pahua, Sotomayor synthesizes her influences in richly textured folktronica, anchoring fluttering woodwinds and polyrhythmic percussion with thudding, dance-floor-ready beats.

At Friday’s performance (1/10/25), organized by the nonprofit World Music Institute, Pahua will share a bill with Willy Soul, a founder of the globally minded, funk-forward party series Funky Seshwa. Tickets are $30.90 on dice.fm. OLIVIA HORN"

Tenorio jr

There's a movie on Netflix, They Shot The Piano Player (2023). It's about the disappearance of Tenório Jr. I'm really surprised, I couldn't find a previous post about  Tenório Jr .  Born in 1940, he disappeared in 1976 when he was 34, just coming into his powers. He came out with his first and only album in Embalo in 1964 ( Spotify ). He's an accompanist on many other albums. I tracked down all the albums mentioned on the Wikipedia page on Spotify and made a playlist . Lots of the albums were not present, and some had to be hunted for, did not come up on the search for the title.  Embalo on YouTube .

Female vocalist I like

My friend asked for more women vocalists. I sent him Right Back To It by Waxahatchee, which is my current favorite. Kathryn Crutchfield is the singer. Unfortunately when I’m meditating, these kinds of questions obsess me as a kind of distraction.  My first thought was Joni Mitchell , and Brandi Carlile . Those two are giants. There’s nobody like Ella Fitzgerald , I think she’s the top. I like her work with Duke Ellington best. Billie Holiday is a favorite. I love it that J. Edgar Hoover sent an agent to get the dirt on her, and he fell in love with her. I love her albums with Lester Young .  Alison Krauss has such a sweet voice, from bluegrass to pop. Her latest albums have been with the guy who sang for Led Zeppelin.  Linda Ronstadt constantly amazed me. Blue Bayou is amazing. Lately I've been listening to Sophie Milman . Indigo Girls have some solid hits. Galileo , Closer To Fine , Tiny Desk Concert . Tiny Desk Concerts are amazing. Power of Two on Spotify . ...

Kurt Elling

I saw a post asking about male jazz singers. Kurt Elling was the top one, so I'm listening to him. He was born in 1967 in Chicago. His father was the musical director at church and he was into music with the family from the time he can remember. Basically he didn't have any training until after college, and he sang in choirs in high school and college. He toured Europe in college with his choir. He had good conductors. He learned from experience, hanging out in clubs. He was encouraged to sit in. He says he had plenty of strikeouts too.  I know online music has killed the music industry, perhaps, perhaps not, because I listen to a lot more music with instant gratification. To get a fraction of a cut of the advertising seems unfair, but then again people used to want to get their records played on the radio.  Looks like he's in Poland now, then he goes to Washington. Birdland 1/8-11, then Orlando, Miami, Tucson, LA. A gig in Baton Rouge, Baltimore, then Ann Arbor. Seems like...
